Grand Forks Herald - 8/25/2022

Aug. 25—GRAND FORKS — The inaugural Vets in the Park event will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in University Park.

The event is free and will offer a range of food, games, guest speakers and entertainment including performances by Kenny and the Classics and The Blue Whalers. Vendors will also be set up to provide information referrals for veterans. Vets in the Park is hosted by Love in Action and Red River Community Action.

The program will get started at 11:30 a.m. and speakers will include Sen. Richard Marcellais, Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski, UND President Andrew Armacost, Base Vice-Commander Col. Delbert Rivera, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Chairman Jamie Azure and Bernice Delorme.

Vets in the Park hopes to bring veterans and the community together to enjoy food, activities, speakers and arts as well as to share information, resources and businesses/organizations that support and work with veterans within Grand Forks and surrounding communities.

People can make donations on the

with all of the proceeds going to Vets in the Park.

Scott Kilde, one of the organizers, said event fliers have been distributed during the Sertoma Fourth of July celebration and outside of Sam's Club to spread the word.

"We're encouraging everybody to come out," he said. "If you're around the park, if you would come and shake hands with one veteran and then leave, you've made a huge difference."

Kilde said the event is not only to honor those who served, but also to thank the families of veterans.

"The military has done so much for Grand Forks, it's time we say thank you."
