Ontario County first responders salute a fallen veteran

Daily Messenger - 12/11/2020

CANANDAIGUA -- Several members of the Ontario County emergency services community participated in a roadside salute to a fallen colleague who died in Alabama.

Christofer Woodard, a sheriff's deputy trainee in Montgomery County, Alabama, was found dead last week. An investigation is continuing. He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force and most recently was a staff sergeant who served at Maxwell Air Force Base before embarking on a career in law enforcement.

According to a statement from Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham, Mr. Woodard started his career with the Sheriff's Office only a month ago, but left an impression. "He loved the career path he was on and he was a perfect fit for our agency. I’m going to miss his smile, graciousness, and our daily talks. He was kind and respectable and eager to bring joy to those around him."

His body arrived Thursday at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home with a police escort.

Along the way, members of law enforcement, ambulance services and fire agencies paid their respects as a motorcade took him from the Thruway to the funeral home.
