---- CUSTOMIZED ADAPTATION --------- PURPOSE: To create a custom adapted handle device which allows individuals with arthritis or grasping or upper extremity disabilities to safely support and move cookware around the kitchen. Australian university student, Ching-Hao Hsu, designed the Arthritis Handle. The Arthritis Handle slips over the forearm and allows the user to safely support the cookware on its journey around the kitchen. The Arthritis Handle is made from thermoplastic elastomers and has a heat-resistant silicone coating to limit heat transfer from the cookware to the user's arm. For pots without a long handle, the user wears an Arthritis Handle on each forearm and squeezes then together on either side of the pot to grip the cookware. For a pot with a handle, the use can grab or support the handle, and press the hot pot against the Arthritis Handle on the opposite forearm. The device has been designed to help spread the weight of the cookware across the forearm, with padded lining to maximize contact, and a magnetic strip adds an extra bit of stability for metal pans. Additionally, the Arthritis Handle can be used on either arm and the ergonomically-designed finger holder at the front is designed so there is no need to twist the fingers. AUTHOR: Paul Ridden.
