Mental health services offered for free to mid-Michigan residents recovering from flood

Detroit Free Press - 6/4/2020

Jun. 3--As mid-Michigan residents raged by last month's flood recover from the devastating damage during a pandemic, mental health professionals are on hand to offer remote services at no charge.

To help, Community Mental Health for Central Michigan is offering a variety of services by telephone and teletherapy to residents in Midland, Gladwin, Isabella, Clare, Mecosta and Osceola counties.

The number to call is 888-733-7753 anytime.

Residents in those counties have said that they're trying to get back on their feet, but the devastation is widespread -- and depressing.

"We're making progress in our recovery efforts," said Bridgette Gransden, Midland County's administrator. "I think that there's certainly an attitude of appreciation for everything that's being done."

So far, Gransden said, Midland County has collected damage assessments from about 2,200 residents, a vital step officials said in the recovery to help determine what financial assistance may be offered.

Wixom Lake, once a refreshing summer getaway for families, is now a bed of mud and muck. The Tittabawassee River, which overflowed, has re-emerged, but dangerous erosion is ongoing.

It may be a long time, officials say, before residents can get back to the way things were before two dams failed, leading to the catastrophic flooding last month that drained Wixom and Sanford lakes and destroyed homes.

On top of that, there's now nationwide news of violent protests.
