Elderly father with untreated chronic depression...

who is so depressed that he's slowly committing suicide by not eating or getting out of bed. According to his doctor, "has no acute medical issues" (The rest of his body, other than his brain, is strong and healthy) but he just wants to "throw in the towel and die." So the doctor has put him on hospice rather than treat the depression. To look at him and how active he is, you'd think he was 80 years old. No matter what the age, don't we help someone who is so depressed that they want to die? Please help me.

Thank you for reaching out to the Network of Care forums. I would recommend reaching out to your local National Alliance on Mental Illness chapter, who should be able to provide you with information on groups and resources and that might be helpful for you and your father. You also might want to try seniors' organizations in your area, many of which will have programs designed with this very issue in mind. I have replied directly, as well, so that I can ascertain a little more information and provide a little more help.
