Auction raises funds for veterans

News-Topic - 10/21/2018

Oct. 19--The Disabled American Veterans of Caldwell County is a non-profit organization that serves veterans in the area in a multitude of ways.

From offering military rites at veteran's funerals, driving veterans to doctor appointments at Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals all over western North Carolina, to providing emergency relief to veterans to help pay for bills and food, the DAV helps veterans when it has the funds to do so.

To help alleviate some of those costs, American Legion Post 209 in Granite Falls will host a silent auction fundraiser Saturday, with proceeds going to the DAV.

Joe Norman, who organizes the DAV's drivers, is thankful for the fundraiser.

"Anytime someone can generate any source of funds it helps the club keep up their activities," Norman said. "The money will go back into the savings account so if something comes up, we'll have the money."

The silent auction will contain gift baskets, clothing, $470 worth of gift cards from local merchants, furniture, and a necklace donated by Sherrill's Jewelry, said April Griggs, who is putting the fundraiser together.

"We are holding it to help raise money to help with transportation costs," Griggs said. "There are a lot more items to bid on, more than we expected."

The Legion is also hosting a cookout and bake sale, selling hot dogs, chips and drink plus baked goods provided by Legion members and other.

Opal Moon and the Darksiders will provide live Southern rock and beach rock music for the fundraiser as well.

Reporter James Branch can be reached at 828-610-8723.
