Orwigsburg to honor military members, veterans with banners

Republican Herald - 1/21/2018

Jan. 21--ORWIGSBURG -- Past and present military members can be honored for their service and sacrifice with a new program in the borough.

Dubbed the Orwigsburg Area "Our Heroes" Banner program, family members can buy a banner to show their pride and support of their loved ones. VFW Post 2198 Quartermaster Charles Cinamella said he discussed the idea with his chaplain, Robert Baessler, last summer and looked into the idea further. He saw other towns were doing this and so the VFW "wanted to do something like it in our town," Cinamella said.

Jan. 31 is the deadline for the first order. The cost is $175 and the banner will be 2 feet by 4 feet. It will have the veteran's name, rank, picture, branch, campaign and the sponsor's name. Production will take six to eight weeks, which puts arrival time somewhere in April.

"We wanted to have them up by Memorial Day," Cinamella said.

The banners will be taken down after Veterans Day. The life span is between three to five years and they will be installed yearly in April and removed after Veterans Day. Once they are no longer serviceable, the family has the option of keeping the banner.

Currently, 20 orders have been placed, and Cinamella expects a total of 30 for the first order. Plans are to order more banners after the initial order. This is not limited to only people from Orwigsburg, but the Orwigsburg area as well.

For more information, contact Cinamella at 570-385-0644. Those interested can pick up a pamphlet at Boyer's, Thomas' Drug Store and borough hall.
