Navy vet to speak at New Phila program

NEW PHILADELPHIA Navy veteran Roger L. Friend will be the featured speaker at New Philadelphia's Veterans Day program on Nov. 11.

The event will be held at 11 a.m. on the courthouse square in New Philadelphia.

Friend is second vice commander of the American Legion Department of Ohio.

He served a total of 22 years and eight months in the U.S. Naval Reserve on active duty and reserve duty, including stints on the USS John F. Kennedy, the USS William R. Rush and the USS Stanley.

He retired in February 2003.

He and his wife, Cindy, have two daughters.

The Veterans Day parade will assemble at 10:30 a.m. at the New Philadelphia Post Office and will begin at 10:45 a.m. with Ron Crabtree as parade marshal.

The parade route will go south on N. Broadway to E. High Avenue and will end at the courthouse plaza.

The program will follow at 11 with Bill Morgan as master of ceremonies.

After the program, a luncheon will be hosted by New Philadelphia VFW Post No. 1445 for all veterans, their family and friends, as well as all who participate in the program.

The event is sponsored by the New Philadelphia Coordinating Committee, which has representatives from Vietnam Veterans of America Post No. 857, American Legion Post No. 139, VFW Post No. 1445 and AMVETS.

In case of inclement weather, the parade will be canceled and the ceremonies will be held in the New Philadelphia High School gymnasium.
