Freedom Bed is a bed with automatic turning designed for use by individuals with spinal cord injury, severe physical disabilities, or neurological disabilities. This therapeutic bed system turns the user to different stable sleeping positions, either manually or automatically. The bed is designed to mimic the body's natural nocturnal motion by mechanical repositioning in order to re-establish blood flow to compressed tissue and prevent bedsores. The horizontal surface of the bed (the paten) that supports the mattress is hinged into three longitudinal sections. The user is positioned on his/her back in the center of the sleep surface. As the bed rotates to one side, the outer or lower section turns up to form a wing that supports the body along its entire length, ankle to shoulder. The bed structure cradles the user to prevent sliding and shear. The wing on the upper side of the platform lowers during this process to properly balance the platform and provides integral strength. As the bed reverses the rotation, the lower wing rises as the higher wing lowers so that, at the horizontal position, all three sections of the platform are horizontal. From the horizontal, the bed automatically rotates to the other side to complete the cycle. The design of the bed allows for the turning of the user along the spinal axis to create a minimal feeling of turning. Control panels on the bed enable caregivers to program the bed for automatic use or to adjust any of the bed's operations manually. Changing the bed from automatic to manual or from manual to automatic is a one-step procedure. In addition, a single-switch interface is available to enable users with minimal mobility to change the programming of the bed from automatic to manual or vice versa. The system also offers safety locks which enable caregivers to determine the choice and number of functions that bed users may access from their control panel. The system enables the dwell time (length of time in one position) and angle of rotation to be set manually or automatically to create a custom turning system. The lateral rotation of the bed provides for up to 60 degrees of turning along the spinal axis. Rotation from one to 30 degrees to either the right or the left can be selected in one-degree intervals. A digital screen on the main control panel provides a readout of the angle settings. The variable dwell time feature enables the user or caregiver to determine how long the user remains at any of the three dwell positions (right, left, or horizontal). Each position has an individual setting and can be varied in one minute intervals from one minute to four hours. The system is also available with optional air-powered torso and leg-raising systems and/or powered hi-lo elevation, trendelenberg, and reverse trendelenberg positioning. The basic bed system includes lateral rotation, mattress, dynamic side rails, heavy-duty casters, and a battery charger. POWER: Uses standard alternating current. Built-in rechargeable batteries maintain function for a number of days, depending on the turning schedule, in the event of a power failure. A 12-volt smart charger is included to ensure batteries are always charged. OPTIONS: Patient override button, head elevation wedge, fitted nylon cover sheet, and fitted double-sided cotton sheets. WARRANTY: The structure has a seven-year warranty; the electrical and moving components have a three-year warranty; the mattress has a two-year warranty.
