PharmaBraille and PharmaBraille-In-A-Box is a braille translation program designed to produce braille medication labels for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. The system translates information about pharmaceutical products into tactile or visual braille for pharmacy labeling. PharmaBraille is an e-mail based system, and PharmaBraille-in-a-Box is a software CD. In the e-mail based version, the pharmacist e-mails information about the medication, such as product name, strength, and product ID. A "robot" automatically translates the information, and it is returned within a few minutes. Information can be translated into 6- or 8-dot contracted braille in a number of European languages. It can be returned as a graphical element that can be imported into Adobe Illustrator or similar design applications, allowing visual braille artwork to be placed on the package or label design, or it can be returned in a range of different formats to accommodate braille notetakers and embossers. The actual translation process is controlled by using different email accounts, whereas export formats and other commands are defined in the subject field of the email. The CD version of the program performs the same functions, but because it is a CD it may not have the most up-to-date pharmaceutical data due to the inability to update.
