---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a laundry sorting system using radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags for employees of a vocational rehabilitation program with cognitive and intellectual disabilities. An agency that employs people with significant disabilities was spending approximately $40,000.00 per year on cleaning for their custodial uniforms. They decided to bring the cleaning in-house to create additional jobs for individuals with cognitive and intellectual disabilities. The operation of the washer and dryer proved easy enough but the employees were challenged when sorting uniforms so they could be delivered to the correct building. A system was designed utilizing RFID tags that were able to go through the wash cycle with the uniform. When the garment was removed from the dryer, the employees swiped the front of it with an antenna. The tag was read and a computer displayed an image of an animal that corresponds to a particular building. The estimated cost of the system is $1,500.00 (computer, reader, and RFID tags). The in-house cleaning resulted in a cost savings. The system allowed employees to work without their supervisors doing the laundry. Additionally, for three employees, there was an increase in productivity of 30, 45, and 120 percent, respectively. AUTHOR: Kevin Ryan. TITLE: Using RFID for Laundry Sorting.
