Death Rate due to Drug Use; Methadone
Shows the death rate per 100,000 population due to methadone related intoxication (methadone-induced deaths). According to SAMHSA €™s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), more than half of all adults drink alcohol, with 6.6% meeting criteria for an alcohol use disorder. Among Americans aged 12 or older, the use of illicit drugs has increased over the last decade from 8.3% of the population using illicit drugs in the past month in 2002 to 9.4% (24.6 million people) in 2013. Of those, 8.2 million people met criteria for a substance use disorder in the past year. The misuse of prescription drugs is second only to marijuana as the nation €™s most common drug problem after alcohol and tobacco, leading to troubling increases in opioid overdoses in the past decade. 2015 and 2016 rates are calculated using the Annual Estimates of the Resident Population: July 1 2015 and 2016. They are not directly comparable to previous time periods.
