Detroit man desperate after mom vanishes from Eastern Market

Detroit Free Press - 5/21/2018

May 21--A Detroit woman who suffers from mental illness is missing, leaving her son desperately searching for her.

Cherase Williams, 49, suffers from schizophrenia, according to her son, Malik Bennett, 21. Bennett last saw Williams at their home at the Diggs Apartments near East Forest Avenue on Friday morning.

She was last seen outside a Team Wellness Center at Eastern Market at around 7 a.m. Saturday, Bennett said.

He said witnesses who saw her leave said she was distraught.

"She was afraid to get touched ... she was getting aggressive," Bennett said. "No one stopped her or tried to talk to her or called 911 or anything. They just let her walk off in that condition."

Bennett says that Williams has been going to the Wellness Center for approximately two years. Williams initially was going every day, he said, but she's been attending less as time went on, before walking out of the program Saturday morning.

Williams is approximately 5-foot-1 and weighs around 160-170 pounds. She has black hair. Williams is the primary caretaker for her granddaughter, the child of her late daughter.

Bennett said that he contacted the Detroit Police's 7th Precinct on Chene for help to find his mother.

Anyone with information is asked to call the 7th Precinct at (313) 596-5700.
